ARTICLES

  • A / An = one, but not specific

    • Use a before words that start with a consonant sound.
      a book, a car, a dog

    • Use an before words that start with a vowel sound.
      an apple, an umbrella, an hour

  • The = specific or known

    • Use the when both the speaker and listener know which one.
      The book on the table is mine.
      The sun is hot today.

Think of a/an as “any one,” and the as “this one that we both know.”

  2. Did you see ___ new teacher today?
