PAST TENSE

Questions

We form past tense questions by placing did before the subject and changing the verb to its base form.

Example:
Statement: She went home.
Question: Did she go home?

Statement word order Question word order
I worked Did I work?
You worked Did you work?
He worked Did he work?
She worked Did she work?
It worked Did it work?
We worked Did we work?
They worked Did they work?

 


Exercises

Part A — Yes/No Questions

Change the following past tense statements into questions as in the example.

Example:
Statement: She lived in Peru for two years.
Question: Did she live in Peru for two years?

  1. They visited the art museum last weekend.

  2. We cooked dinner together last night.

  3. He studied French at university.

  4. You travelled to Japan in 2019.

  5. Sarah bought a new bicycle last month.

  6. They stayed at a small hotel by the beach.

  7. The children played football in the park.

  8. I finished my homework before dinner.

  9. He drove to work instead of taking the bus.

  10. We met at the café on Saturday.


Part B — Wh-Questions

Change the following past tense statements into questions starting with the question word in parentheses.

Example:
Statement: Marianne arrived at ten o’clock. (What time)
Question: What time did Marianne arrive?

  1. They moved to London in 2015. (When)

  2. He paid for the meal with his credit card. (How)

  3. The concert started at 8 p.m. (What time)

  4. She spoke to her cousin in Spanish. (In what language)

  5. We walked to the station. (How)

  6. The film lasted two and a half hours. (How long)

  7. I sent the email yesterday morning. (When)

  8. He sat next to me during the meeting. (Where)

  9. She worked at that company for three years. (How many years)

  10. They built the house themselves. (Who)
